The Department of Economics, Jagannath Barooah University, Jorhat, organized a Special Talk Program on the topic “Entrepreneurship Opportunities through Agriculture” on March 7, 2026 at the New Conference Hall of the University.
The program started with the welcome address by Dr. Ashrafuzzaman Chowdhury, Associate Professor and Head Department of Economics . He highlighted the relevance of the program and it will encourage students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities in the agricultural sector.
Thereafter the program was formally inaugurated by Dr. Surajit Sharma, Academic Registrar (In-charge), Jagannath Barooah University. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the growing importance of entrepreneurial ventures, particularly in the context of limited government job opportunities, and appreciated the initiative of the Department of Economics in organizing such a meaningful program for students.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Nivedita Deka, Professor and Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Assam Agricultural University delivered an insightful lecture on the vast scope of entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector. She elaborated on the numerous opportunities available in areas such as agriculture, fishery, sericulture, horticulture, organic farming, and agricultural input supply, and discussed emerging avenues for young entrepreneurs. She also addressed the challenges faced in agricultural enterprises and highlighted the importance of marketing support, innovation, and institutional support for the successful development of agri-based ventures.
During her lecture, Dr. Deka also cited inspiring examples of successful agricultural entrepreneurs including Padmashree awardee Hemoprabha Chutia, the Bahubali Egg initiative, and Neelam Dutta of Pabhoi Greens, Lakhimpur (recipient of the Assam Gaurav award), encouraging students to explore the potential of agriculture as a viable career path.
The program witnessed active participation from students and faculty members of the university. Around 100 students from different departments benefited from the informative and motivating lecture.
Faculty members of the Department of Economics including Dr. Rajen Goswami, Associate Professor and Mrs. Santana Dutta, Associate Professor, and Mr. Ritopan Borah Assistant Professor were also present in the program.The program was anchored by Dr Ronjit Khanikar , Assistant Professor of the department.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Probenson Terang, Department of Economics, Jagannath Barooah University, expressing gratitude to the speaker, university authorities, faculty members, and students for making the program a success.
