The department of Philosophy came into existence with the introduction of Logic as one of the six subjects with which J. B. College was established in 1930. It got affiliation from Calcutta University in 1931 which was only up to the Intermediate Level. In 1941 the Department was raised to the Degree Level and got its affiliation from Calcutta University along with the College. In 1954 Philosophy Honours Course was introduced under Gauhati University. It was reaffiliated to Dibrugarh University with the establishment of the university. In 1996 the Department was raised to the Post Graduate Level which is the Regular Department of Dibrugarh University outside its campus. In 2012 the Department was recognised as a Centre for Research by Dibrugarh University.

The aim of this department is to produce competent human resources who would be beneficial to the society. To achieve this it tries to disseminate knowledge about philosophical geniuses of the past like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle etc. of the west and Buddha, Mahavira, Sankaracharyya, Sankardeva, Sri Chaitanya etc. of India making them acquainted with the development of Philosophy up to the present thinkers in both Indian and western perspectives. It tries to inculcate moral values in the students as well as making them aware of the socio-political and religious scenario in the past and  present contexts. It tries to make the outlook of the students wider and comprehensive towards the world with an enhanced ability to analyse situations in a rational attitude.

One of the founder teachers of J. B. College, Late Prafulla Pran Changkakati was the first Head of the Department of Philosophy. Being a renowned teacher, he was deputed to Calcutta University for affiliation of J. B. College under this university. Calcutta University extended its affiliation to this College in 1931. Under the bold and able leadership of its founder HoD, Late Prafulla Pran Changkakati, the Department of Philosophy was raised to the Degree Level.

After Professor Changkakati, the department had the opportunity to be led by Late Krishna Ch. Kakati from 1950 to 1974. With his remarkable effort Honours Course in Philosophy started in 1954 under the affiliation of Gauhati University. In 1974 Prof K. C. Kakati became the Principal of the College.

Late Prof. Kalipada Chakrovarty became the Head of the Department in 1974. He led the department for 8 years before he became the Principal (In-Charge) of the College in 1982.

In 1982, Prof. Prabhat Ch. Mahanta took the charge of HoD and the department was under his leadership for 12 years of academic excellence of students. As an enthusiastic teacher he contributed not only to the departmental affairs, but also to many co-curricular activities of the College like N.S.S., Sports and Cultural programmes.

After his retirement in 1994, Dr. Anjana Chaliha became the HoD of Philosophy. She is the founder President of Assam Philosophical Forum. During her tenure the Post Graduate Course in Philosophy started in 1996 as a regular department under Dibrugarh University. In 2000, Dr. Anjana Chaliha became the Principal of J. B. College.

In 2001, Prof. Arotee Neog took the charge of the department as HoD. Her amicable personality helped the students as well as her colleagues to smoothly run the department under her leadership up to 2012. She became the Academic Vice-Pricipal(Arts) and retired from the department in 2017. After her retirement she was invited as a guest faculty to the department.

In 2013, the Headship  of the Department went to (Late) Dr. Panchami Bhattacharyya Borah. She guided the department for 3 years with her enthusiasm and energetic character. In 2019, she became the Vice-Principal of the College and retired from that chair.

In 2016, Prof. Nibedita Bezboruah took the charge of the department. Under her able leadership the department is thriving to achieve new goals with newer responsibilities.
