History of the Department:

The history of the Department of History, Jagannath Barooah College is intractably linked with the establishment of the college in 1930. History as a subject in Intermediate classes was started from the very beginning where eminent Indologist and the established principal of the college, Krishna Kanta Handiqui, took the responsibility of teaching the students. Later on, from 1962 major course in history was offered by the college. From the year 2023 Post-Graduate Programme in History was offered by the department. At present both under graduate and post graduate programme are offered by the Department of History. The fundamental thrust area of the department is to impart holistic education to its students with a intricate understanding of the past socio-cultural dynamics. Currently the department has 192 students pursuing both under graduate and post graduate programmes.
