Initially, the Department of Zoology was established in 01-10-1953 as a Department of Biology. Dr. Jashodananda Bharali (1953-1957) was the founder HoD of the Department of Biology. In the year of 1961, the Department of Biology separated into full-fledged departments of Zoology and Botany. The Department has a group of highly active and vibrant faculty members committed to deliver high-quality research standards in pure and applied areas of zoology. The research interests of the faculty members cover a broad range of subjects such as biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, ecology, ethnobiology and ethnopharmacology, bioremediation, fish and fisheries, microbial products, preclinical research on herbal drugs, sericulture, toxicology, preparation of microbial consortia etc. The department currently offers higher secondary and three-year B.Sc. programs.
