The Geological Forum of the Department of Geology, Jagannath Barooah University, organized “GeoConnect – A Student Interactive Lecture Series” to mark the eve of International Geologists’ Day 2025. The event was held on 5th April 2025 at the seminar hall of the istitute, starting at 9:00 AM.
To commemorate the occasion, GeoConnect 3.0 event brought together with students, faculty members, and alumni of the department. Prof. Tapos Kr Goswami, an esteemed alumnus from the first Geology batch of the college and currently Professor and Head, Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University, was invited as the resource person for the interactive session.
The event began with a welcome address delivered by Abinash Bikash Hazarika, a 6th-semester student, who greeted the dignitaries present on the occasion. Distinguished guests included Mr. Rajib Sarma, Dr. Nurul Amin, Prof. Tapos Kr Goswami, Dr. Bashab N. Mahanta, and department faculty members—Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia, Mr. Sorat Konwar, Dr. Chaitra Dhar Taye, and Dr. Raghupratim Rakshit.
The programme was formally inaugurated with an opening speech by Rajib Sarma, who shared his reflections on the importance of International Geologists’ Day and his experiences in the field of geology. Pakhi Phukan, a second-semester student, also spoke on the significance of the day and the objectives of the event.
During the interactive session, Prof. Goswami shared anecdotes from his journey as a lecturer at Jagannath Barooah College and his evolution into a respected academician. Following his address, the departmental e-newsletter ‘GEOSAVVY – Issue 2’ (2024–2025 edition) was virtually inaugurated by Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia, Head of the Department. The newsletter is a collaborative initiative of the faculty and members of the Geological Forum.
Before the invited talk, Sneha Deori, a second-semester student, introduced Prof. Goswami with a brief introductory speech. Prof. Goswami then delivered his talk on “The Eastern Himalaya: Broad Tectonic Framework,” offering an in-depth overview of the tectonic and mountain systems of the region.
As part of the event, an Intra-Departmental Quiz Programme was also organized by the Geological Forum and coordinated by Pooja Borah, a 2nd-semester student. The quiz saw enthusiastic participation from several student teams.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Binod Gogoi, a 6th-semester student of the department, bringing the event to a graceful close.
